Welsh Cup hopefuls learn qualifying opponents

Believe it or not, the long journey to next season’s Welsh Cup final begins as soon as September.

Before the competition itself kicks in, eleven teams from our area will have to progress through the qualifying stages.

The draw for the first round – made in Cardiff on Friday – throws up at least two Anglesey derbies with Gwynedd League outfit Menai Bridge Tigers hoping to cause an upset at the first hurdle at Welsh Alliance newcomers Holyhead Town.

Bodedern Athletic – newly promoted to Division One in the Welsh Alliance – will entertain Aberffraw in Division Two, while Gaerwen are the visitors at Nantlle Vale. The ties will be played on Saturday 1st September – the full draw for the North West is as follows:

Amlwch Town v Llandudno Amateurs
Bodedern Athletic v Aberffraw
Glantraeth v Penmaenmawr Phoenix
Holyhead Town v Menai Bridge Tigers
Nantlle Vale v Gaerwen
Prestatyn Sports v Pentraeth
Pwllheli v Llannefydd
Trearddur Bay United v Meliden

A fortnight later, the FAW Trophy gets underway – the first round draw was made on Wednesday for 28 clubs in South Wales, but another 108 teams – including those from the North – have been given an automatic bye into the second round.
