Bickerstaff quits Canaries ahead of new season

Allan Bickerstaff has left Caernarfon Town after just four months in charge.

The former Rhyl and Connah’s Quay manager was unveiled as a surprise successor to fans favourite Sean Eardley in April.

At the time, the Canaries described his appointment as part of a ”important and long-planned” restructuring at management level.

But ahead of the new Cymru Premier season next weekend, Bickerstaff has stepped down as first team manager at The Oval, blaming work commitments for his decision.

Eardley has now regained his managerial duties, with Richard Davies as his assistant. The announcement came before Saturday’s 2-0 win at Corwen in the second round of the Nathaniel MG Cup.

Bickerstaff was officially in charge for just three competitive games at the end of last season – including the semi-final defeat to Cardiff Met in the Europa League play-offs.

His brief time with the Cofis marked his third stint in Welsh Premier football – having won the league title with Rhyl in 2008-09, before a stint with Connah’s Quay in 2015.

In a statement on Friday, he said: ”Due to personal and professional demands on my time, I am not in a position to fulfil my initial plans, which was to enable this fantastic club to take the next step forward to again becoming a major force in Welsh football.”

”Everybody at the club have made me extremely welcome and have been thoroughly supportive in all aspects.”

”Thanks especially to Sean, Richard, Rhys, Darren and Marc – I’m sure they will move the club to the next level…not forgetting the passionate and highly vocal supporters, who were on a different level to anything I’ve seen in many years.”

Caernarfon kick off their league campaign next Sunday afternoon (18th August) when they visit reigning WPL champions The New Saints.

The Canaries’ vice-chairman, Paul Evans, is currently overseeing the day-to-day running of the club, in place, of chairman Marc Roberts, due to illness.
