Two men injured in Holyhead powder plant blast

Fire crews are dealing with the aftermath of an explosion at an aluminium powder plant in Holyhead.

Two men are in hospital with minor injuries after a loud blast was heard at the AMG Alpoco works on London Road at just after 6pm on Saturday evening (10th August).

A large white plume of smoke was seen for miles around the site – while the explosion could be heard in the Rhosneigr, Valley and Bryngwran areas. Blast waves were also reportedly felt as far as Amlwch and Llangefni.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said four crews from Holyhead, Amlwch and Bangor were called out to the scene. The Wales Air Ambulance also attended but was not needed

The fire has been confined to a hopper and there is no risk to the public.

No one needed treatement at the scene – and everyone on site at the time of the explosion was accounted for, but two men have since made their own way to hospital for minor injuries.

A spokesperson for the Fire Service said: ”The fire is expected to smoulder for some time and is being kept under surveillance by a site engineer. Crews will return periodically to reinspect the site.”
