A pensioner remains critically ill in hospital after he was shot with a crossbow outside his home near Holyhead.

Detectives say the 74 year-old man suffered ”horrific, life changing injuries” after the shooting in a remote area off South Stack Road in the early hours of Good Friday (19th April).

House to house inquiries have been held in the area throughout the day as police continue to try and establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

One officer said they were determined to track down whoever was responsible for a ”highly unusual incident” for north west Wales.

The alarm was first raised at just before 12.35am, when the man was hit by a bolt while he was trying to fix a TV satellite dish outside his house, located near the junction of Porthdafarch Road and Plas Road.

He managed to return indoors and call an ambulance crew, who took him to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor in a critical condition.

At 2.45am, following a medical examination, police became involved when they were told by night staff at Ysbyty Gwynedd that the man had sustained injuries consistent with being shot with a crossbow.

Detectives said the motive behind the shooting was unknown – but their investigation is still at an early stage, with CID officers from Llangefni, crime scene investigators and local policing teams following several lines of inquiry.

They’ve appealed for witnesses who may have been in and around South Stack Road at any time between 6pm on Thursday evening (18th April) and 4am on Good Friday.

Detective Chief Inspector Brian Kearney said: ”We are also keen on speaking to anybody who may live in or around that area and who may have private CCTV, or anybody who may have travelled along South Stack Road who may have dash cam footage.”

He added: ”The elderly member of our community has received horrendous, life-changing injuries as a result of this incident, the motive of which remains totally unknown.”

”North West Wales remains one of the safest places in the UK. This is a highly unusual incident for this area and we are determined to find whoever was responsible for this as a matter of urgency.”

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact Llangefni CID on 101, quoting reference no. X052857, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
