One game away: draw made for Welsh Cup qualifiers

Fourteen teams from Anglesey and Gwynedd are just one game away from reaching the first round proper of this season’s JD Welsh Cup.

Arguably, the pick of the ties for the second qualifying round will see a needle match of a Holyhead derby.

Holyhead Town, who ran out 5-3 winners at Amlwch Town on Saturday, have been drawn to visit Holyhead Hotspur at The New Oval. Both teams have been among the early pacesetters in the Welsh Alliance.

Hotspur, adjusting back to life in the third tier since relegation from the Huws Gray Alliance, saw their unbeaten start in Division One brought to an end with a 3-0 defeat at Llandudno Albion last Wednesday.

Town, who reformed in 2016, are two points off joint leaders Gaerwen and Llannefydd with four wins from their opening six games.

Elsewhere, Bangor 1876 of the Gwynedd League have been rewarded with a home clash against Welsh Alliance Division One outfit Penrhyndeudraeth.

The Treborth club remain unbeaten in all competition following Saturday’s 4-1 win over Llandudno Athletic – with Jamie Petrie and Dylan Summers Jones on the scoresheet yet again.

Aberffraw’s reward for a 3-1 win over Llandudno Junction is a home clash with Glan Conwy, while Blaenau Ffestiniog visit Mochdre Sports and Llanberis go to St Asaph.

Nefyn United await Mynydd Llandegai, who were awarded a walkover after reigning Gwynedd League champions Menai Bridge Tigers pulled out of their opening tie.

Among other clubs joining the fray, Nantlle Vale are drawn at home to Bodedern Athletic, while Llanrug United entertain Llanfairfechan Town (Vale of Clwyd and Conwy League) – who caused an early shock by knocking out Kinmel Bay of the Welsh Alliance on Saturday.

In the Central draw, Barmouth and Dyffryn United – who beat Abermule 1-0 on Saturday – are drawn at home to another Mid Wales League side, Llanidloes Town.
