Man dies after Borth y Gest sea rescue

A 45 year-old man has died after he was rescued from the sea near Porthmadog.

It’s believed he was trying to rescue a boy at Borth y Gest when he got into difficulty at around 4pm on Monday afternoon (5th August).

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency said the man, from Greater Manchester, was pulled out of the water by onlookers, who tried to revive him on the beach. Emergency services were sent to the scene following a number of 999 calls from the public.

He was airlifted by the Caernarfon coastguard helicopter to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor but died on Monday night.

The RNLI inshore lifeboat from Criccieth also attended the scene, along with police, coastguard rescue and ambulance crews.
