Man arrested after Porthmadog bypass crash

A man has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving after a car crashed into a gas tank on the Porthmadog bypass.

The A487 between Porthmadog and Minffordd was closed for around six hours after the collision outside Porthmadog FC’s ground at Y Traeth at just before 9.15pm on Tuesday evening.

Four fire crews from south Gwynedd were called out to contain the gas leak from a LPG tank at the side of the road, using a fine mist.

A pre-season friendly between Porthmadog and Penrhyndeudraeth was abandoned eight minutes from time because of the crash, with the hosts leading 2-0. The club said the car careered off the bypass and ended up in their car park.

The driver managed to escape but he was arrested at the scene. The road was finally reopened by 3.30am on Wednesday morning.
