Jury dismissed in Llanbedrog manslaughter trial

A jury has been discharged after they failed to reach a verdict in the trial of two gamekeepers.

Ben Fitzsimons and Ben Wilson denied manslaughter by gross negligence after Peter Colwell was shot dead in a 4×4 outside a pub in Llanbedrog in February 2017.

Both men had been drinking with Mr Colwell (18) on the night of the shooting. Prosecutors alleged he died because of a ‘cavalier attitude’ towards gun safety.

Fitzsimons (23), from Nanhoron near Pwllheli, was found guilty on Tuesday of possessing a loaded shotgun in a public place. Two other men were cleared of any involvement.

But nearly a week after the jury retired to deliberate, they were discharged by Mr Justice Picken after they could not reach a verdict on the manslaughter charges.

Prosecutors have already sought a retrial, due to begin on Monday 3 June 2019.

Both Fitzsimons and his boss, Wilson (29), from Ely in Cambridgeshire, were released on bail.

Harry Butler (23), from Llaniestyn, and Michael Fitzsimons (25), from Nanhoron, were acquitted of possessing a shotgun in a public place.
