Inter Games 2019: Team Môn name women’s squad

Team Ynys Môn has named its provisional women’s squad as preparations continue for the Inter Games football.

Wales and Sheffield United keeper Nicky Davies features among the 21 players named by manager Karen Williams on Tuesday. The Bangor-born keeper has played a part in the Ynys Môn squad since the 2003 Island Games in Guernsey.

Fifteen players have also previously competed at the bi-annual Games, but with football ruled out of this year’s event in Gibraltar, they’re setting their sights instead on next month’s championship, being held on Anglesey.

It’s the third major tournament to feature Ynys Môn Women since returning to the Island Games fold in Jersey in 2015 and Gotland two years ago.

Three players won’t make the cut for the final Inter Games squad, leaving manager Karen Williams with a few selection headaches: ”It has been a real journey and I’d love to be able to take every player with me to the tournament, because they’ve all worked so hard and given their all, but I’ve had to make some tough decisions and there are still some more to come.”

”We started this adventure last summer, getting together for the first time in Amlwch last July and the commitment and desire from every single player since then has been outstanding and I’m confident that whoever is selected for the final squad in a few weeks’ time, we’ll be in a good position to succeed when the real action starts in June.”

”As a team we keep talking about what an honour it would be to represent Ynys Môn on home turf this summer – ourselves and the men’s side will be the first ever football teams to do it at this level – and we just can’t wait to get going now.”

”I look forward to continuing to working with this fantastic group of players over the coming weeks, before having some difficult decisions to make as we announce our final squad of 18.”

So far, Ynys Môn Women have played just one friendly ahead of the tournament – a 10-1 victory over Bethesda Athletic, who clinched the Division Two title in the North Wales Women’s League this season.
