Four charged after police officers attacked

The temporary chief constable of North Wales Police has condemned a spate of attacks on officers during the Bank Holiday.

In Gwynedd, four people have been charged following assaults on five officers in Caernarfon, Bangor and Bala over the weekend.

An NWP spokesperson said one officer had his eye gouged and another was taken to hospital for a broken nose. Others suffered cuts and bruising after being head butted, kicked, pushed and scratched.

Gareth Pritchard described the attacks as ”completely unaccpetable and very concerning”. He said: ”Our officers are out there doing a demanding job, working hard to protect the most vulnerable and to keep people safe. An assault of any kind should never be considered “part of the job”.”

”Our officers get good training and equipment and we seek to ensure that welfare arrangements are readily available when they become victims of an assault. These attacks leave their mark physically and mentally on the officers, and in some cases, their families.”

“Some of the assaults are very serious and we include impact statements on these assaults to ensure the courts are fully sighted on the effect on the officers and their families.”

Elsewhere in the region, two people were arrested in Wrexham and detectives are expecting to make further arrests as their investigations continue.

Senior officers met with members from the North Wales Police Federation on Tuesday to discuss the attacks, which will be reviewed by a specialist group. Mr Pritchard added he had signed an impact statement about a serious assault on an officer.

Meanwhile, the number of local officers being trained to use Tasers has increased to nearly 300 across North Wales with firearms officers providing extra cover.

Chief Constable Pritchard said: ”What we want is to make sure that our officers are equipped to protect themselves as best they can and to feel confident out on duty on our streets. Tasers and also body worn video play an important part in this.”
