NATHANIEL MG CUP FIRST ROUND
Bangor City 0-1 Llandudno
Any jitters about City’s sudden slump in form could not have been settled on Tuesday night as they failed to pass the first hurdle in the League Cup.
Robbie Jones and Sam Jones produced early chances but Llandudno increasingly came into their own. They were finally rewarded when substitute John Owen tapped home from close range on 65 minutes.
City posed little threat thereafter and conceded their third straight defeat in all competition. Their stuttering league campaign continues away at early stragglers Holyhead Hotspur on Friday night.
Rhyl 4-2 Caernarfon Town
The Canaries were made to pay an even tougher price as the Lillywhites produced an astonishing second half comeback.
A Caernarfon side boasting seven changes from Sunday’s league win at Cardiff Met went ahead when a foul on Rhys Roberts led to a Nathan Craig penalty, deflected into the net off keeper Jon Hill-Dunt.
Poor defending allowed Cai Jones to drill home a 20-yard screamer on sixteen minutes. Danny Brookwell was unlucky to see a third goal tipped away by the Lillywhites keeper before the break.
But Rhyl finally found their rhythm as Mike Pritchard turned in a well-worked cross from close range on 55 minutes. Within another two minutes, Barry Torrence had produced the equaliser.
Former Caernarfon player Danny Sullivan turned the game on its head when he beat keeper Nick Gould with a superb free kick – and Pritchard grabbed his brace from a Kristian Pierce cross with six minutes left.
With the league cup out of their grasp, the Canaries must regroup again before The New Saints arrive at the Oval in Welsh Premier action on Friday night.
