40 jobs to go as Llangefni cable factory closes

Around 40 jobs will be lost when a cable-making firm closes its Llangefni factory.

Marco Cable Management will move production from its site at the Bryn Cefni industrial estate to West Bromwich in the West Midlands. Staff were informed on Monday.

The company has blamed a collapse in the plastics market for its decision. It follows the closure of the REHAU plastics factory in Amlwch with the loss of over a hundred jobs.

A 30-day consultation period with workers will begin on Friday – but the company expects to shut its Llangefni base by the end of next March.

All staff have been offered a transfer to the Unistrut UK site in West Bromwich – but in a statement, the company admitted not all of its employees were in a position to relocate.

A spokesperson for Marco Cable said: ”This decision follows a detailed analysis of facilities and changing market conditions within the United Kingdom in which Marco operates within.”

”We recognise this is difficult news for the affected employees, their families and colleagues…we are assisting impacted employees by discussing and facilitating the process of relocation to the West Bromwich facility as well entering into the collective consultation process.”

”In some cases, we are working with identified employees on other opportunities within Atkore.”

The Marco Cable site in Llangefni was opened in 2003 – at its peak, it employed more than 80 people on Anglesey and across the rest of the UK. The company, which makes steel wire cable tray and UPVC trunking, is now part of the international Aktore group.

Reacting to the closure announcement, the Unite union said it was ”very disappointing news” for both its staff and for Anglesey’s economy.

Paddy McNaught, the union’s regional officer for Wales, added: ”For an area like Anglesey this is a big employer…workers will be offered the chance to relocate but it is probably not financially viable for many of those on the shop floor.”
