Work is getting underway to improve flood defences in Y Felinheli.
It will take four months to build the new £700,000 protection scheme on Beach Road, including a new sea wall and and improved drainage system.
The work was due to get underway last week, but it was postponed because of Storm Ciara. Constructors from an Talwrn-based firm, OBR, are hoping to complete the scheme by June.
Councillor Gareth Griffith, who represents Y Felinheli on Gwynedd Council said: ”People who live in this area of Felinheli have seen water coming over from the Menai and the recent storms where properties in other parts of the country have been flooded remind us all of the impact it can have on people’s homes.”
The project, which has been jointly funded by the county council and the Welsh Government, is aimed at improving the protection against tidal flooding for homes, businesses and the highway on Beach Road.
The council says any disruption will be kept to a minimum, although there will be a temporary road closure during drainage work. The playground and footpath along the shoreline may also need to be shut temporarily, along with diversions to properties and businesses in the village.
Councillor Catrin Wager added: ”This area of the village has experienced flooding from the nearby Menai Strait in the past which has posed a risk to nearby properties.”
”This project will see new sea wall constructed which will be set back from the shoreline – alongside Beach Road itself. Work to improve drainage at the bottom of Snowdon Street is also intended as part of the project.”
”We have all seen the recent storms that have had such a devastating impact on communities, and with the effects of climate change the likelihood of floods affecting communities is increasing. We are therefore very pleased to see work getting underway on this flood protection work in Felinheli which will benefit the people of the local community.”
She added: ”Local property owners have been consulted and kept informed throughout the design stage and a ‘meet the contractor’ event was recently held in the village which was well-attended. We realise that the construction phase which is getting underway will cause some short-term disruption, but we firmly believe that residents will benefit when the work is complete.”
