Man dies in Britannia Bridge crash

A man from Warwickshire has died after a two-vehicle crash just off the Britannia Bridge.

The bridge was closed for around eight hours following the collision between an Audi A5 and a lorry on the eastbound carriageway at around 1.50am on Friday morning (31st August).

Police say the driver of the Audi was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by a specialist liaison officer from Warwickshire Police.

The bridge closure led to major tailbacks on the A55 eastbound, the A5 through Menai Bridge and surrounding roads including the A5025. The A55 was closed eastbound between Llanfairpwll and Bangor.

Sergeant Raymond Williams from the Roads Policing Unit said: ”We appreciate that people have been caught up in lengthy delays, and are fully aware of the impact closing the roads can have on the transport network, however people must appreciate that we have a job to do when it comes to investigating fatal collisions.”

”We, as the police, are the lead agency for collision investigation, and have the primary duty to investigate and establish the circumstances that have led to road deaths and life changing injuries. We must discharge our responsibilities to the coroner, the wider judiciary and family members.”

”The recovery procedure for the HGV was also complex due to the nature of the load it was carrying, hence it took a while longer to fully re-open the road.”

Police are now appealing for witnesses or anyone who have dash cam footage while travelling in the area at the time of the crash.

Anyone with information should contact the Western Roads Policing Unit on 101, quoting reference no. W123868.

Police always make a mountain out of a molehill when there is an accident. Why close the whole road when only one side is involved.

Stop talking rubbish. A guy has died. Police need to make sure all evidence has been collected before they re open a road. Only eastbound was closed when i passed in the morning. I was stuck in it for 2.5 hours and was late for work. I don’t care. I see the bigger picture. A man has died and his family are grieving. Well done nwp.having to see incidents like this and getting slated by these kind of idiots.probably some sort of criminal been done by the police and angry about it!
